Transforming the Add-ons Experience

We're launching a significant update to our add-ons system that organizes items by occasion categories, effectively increasing capacity from 20 total add-ons to over 600 possible add-ons. This change addresses key florist pain points while improving the customer shopping experience.

All existing add-ons will automatically migrate to the "Just Because" category, with florists able to recategorize them as desired.

Why We're Making These Changes

We're updating how add-ons work across our platform to address several longstanding pain points:

  1. The 20 add-on limit was too restrictive for many florists who wanted to offer more options

  2. Finding relevant add-ons was difficult without proper categorization

  3. The add-on management interface was cluttered with unnecessary fields

  4. The customer experience wasn't optimized for easy browsing and selection

Our solution organizes add-ons by occasion categories, which effectively increases the total possible add-ons while keeping the interface fast and responsive.

Key Changes to Understand

  1. Occasion-Based Organization

    • Add-ons are now organized by occasion categories

    • 20 add-ons limit is now per occasion (up to 620 total add-ons possible across 31 categories)

    • Default "Just Because" category for products not tied to specific occasions

  2. Improved User Interface

    • New two-column layout being AB tested

    • Better visibility of selections and added items

    • Mobile-optimized experience with sticky elements

  3. Enhanced Account Interface

    • Simplified product add/edit form for add-ons

    • Easy category selection through checkboxes

    • Streamlined layout focusing on relevant fields

  4. Adding a New Add-on

The add-on creation form has been simplified:

  • "Just Because" is selected by default (can be unchecked)

  • All occasion categories are available as simple checkboxes

  • Cleaner interface focused only on add-on-specific fields

Editing Existing Add-ons

When editing existing add-ons:

  • All current categories will be displayed as checked

  • Uncheck any category to remove the add-on from that occasion

  • Character limits: Title (38 characters), Description (68 characters)

  • Existing add-ons exceeding these limits are grandfathered in, but will be subject to these limits when edited

Customer Experience Walkthrough

Selecting Add-ons During Checkout

When a customer selects a product tied to a specific occasion (such as a birthday arrangement), the add-ons step will automatically display items from that same occasion category.

Switching Between Occasion Categories

Customers can easily switch between different occasion categories during the add-ons step. If they select an add-on from a different category (e.g., selecting a Christmas add-on while originally browsing a birthday product), the flow will continue with that newly selected occasion.
